Veronica Taylor – writing fiction is in my blood!

Published: Sep 17, 2021

It’s somewhere in the 1960’s, I think, the first time mom and dad met. I know only that it was during some festival in Uruapan Michoacan, Mexico. Perhaps it was correct. Fireworks in the night sky. Lights lit like on a Christmas Tree. And maybe she noticed dad, an American man, struggling to order food. Understanding English, she helped him out. And later, they stood near other revelers and listened to a mariachi band. And later still, somewhere near a splashing water fountain, the festival, lights and noise become blurry and indistinct. Left behind, the dark silhouette of a tall man and short woman standing close. And perhaps mom murmured Renee Zellweger’s words to Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire, “You had me at hello.” to my dad. And in the time between night and early mourn, dad finds his courage and murmurs Humphrey Bogart’s famous line, “Here’s looking at you, kid.” Mom gives him a saucy smile and dad gives her his usual quiet one. Then pressing a piece of paper into her hand, he walked away. Years after my dad’s death, I found a box of black and white photos.

I realized my imaginings of him had been wrong. Yes, his eyes had remained calm, and his smile was quiet until the end. But his pictures also told me the story of an adventurer. A yet unknown Indiana Jones, one who: backflipped off a boat to scuba dive near sharks, walked across Alaskan snow, treasure hunted with men wearing white shirts and hats tipped at an angle, and one evening in Mexico, he had leaned down to hear what a little senorita, my mom, had to say to him. I’ll admit, I became obsessed with telling their life story to others. As it goes, in time I did find opportunities. Or so I thought. For one person, I wrote a story about what I’d do if I had one more day with my mom. With someone else, I wrote a story about a drug-addicted ghost who remembered past family as he floated around the hospital where he had died.

But unfortunately, nothing came of these two opportunities. But a few months back, I was again stoked after seeing a Craigslist post–a company seeking adventurous, true stories, and if accepted, these stories would possibly be turned into a movie, a book, a graphic novel, etc.. That company is called BlazonMediaPartners.com https://blazonmediapartners.com/about/ I had the privilege of emailing their company’s Chief Executive Officer, Jeffrey Masonek, and so hoped that my short screenplay based on mom and dad’s life story would be considered. Unfortunately, while mom and Dad’s story does have drama, it’s more a love story and does not meet the Blazon Media Partners criteria.

But ever positive, I’m truly hoping it will still be considered at some point. Even years later, I can still hear mom and dad’s story calling to me. It’s a story as adventurous as they were, as enduring as their 47-year marriage, and one that showed true love never dies. Perhaps that’s the reason I’m a fan of never ending love, but I also love horror with a purpose and characters you hate but can still understand
